Zen Bamboo Pillow | Ultimate Review & Buying Guide
Zen Bamboo Ultra Plush Gel Pillow Review
Quality | Make and Feel
The Zen Bamboo Ultra Plush Gel pillow is one of the most popular (Entry-level bamboo pillows) sold online.
It has made it’s home between the pack of higher-end and lower-end pillows sold today. But how does it compare to high-end pillows made from bamboo viscose? Most of us will be using separate pillow covers so you can always upgrade for added comfort.
It might not affect the quality of the pillow, but I believe packaging a company uses leaves a first impression of what to expect inside. Some bamboo pillows in the same quality range, come in plain, unbranded packaging that feels cheap.
The gel pillow from Zen Bamboo I purchased was from Amazon and arrived in a vacuum sealed bag. As you can see in the picture, the bag is reusable and has the Zen Bamboo brand name on it. It took about a day in the sun for the pillow to finish expanding and for the chemical odor to disappear. I avoided using the dryer because of the gel inside, and I’ve had bad experiences with washing gel pillows before.
The quality and material is average for the price of these pillows. The bamboo pillow cover is Not removable, and the label says “Dry Clean Only“. If quality is your main concern then you’ll most likely be using higher end bamboo pillow covers. That being the case, you only want to consider the quality of the gel fiber filling used inside.
Within the first month, I noticed these Zen Bamboo gel pillows begin to shrink and collapse. Fluffing the pillow every few days, brings it back to life. If you’re not used to fluffing up your pillows often, you might notice the shrinking even sooner.
Comfort | Softness Rating
Some bamboo gel pillows are adjustable depending on your sleep habits.
When it comes to comfort, the Zen Bamboo Ultra Plush Gel pillow is above average.
At first, all fiber filled pillows provide you with firm support any way you sleep. Pillows will begin to show you their true comfort and what to expect for the future after about a month.
I’m a side sleeper and I’m used to having to curl my pillow for more neck support after about 3 weeks. So far at about 2 months in, I haven’t come to that point yet.
For its price, I wasn’t expecting much from Zen Bamboo, but for an entry level pillow, it delivers more than expected!
I can feel a major difference between the Zen Bamboo pillow and other gel-filled pillows, due to the bamboo pillow cover.
You’ll agree comfort is the main reason to spend extra money on any pillow. You can use bamboo pillow cases to add the luxurious benefits of bamboo to any pillow, but you can’t add anything to improve comfort.
Zen Bamboo does provide a “30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee” if purchased from Amazon and may qualify for Amazon Prime 2 Day Shipping. Be sure to decide within the 30 days, in case you also didn’t see a difference in comfort.
Price | Where to Buy
You can buy the Zen Bamboo Ultra Plush Gel pillow from Amazon or eBay in pairs.
They are on the lower end of the price range for bamboo pillows, which make it an excellent “Gateway” bamboo pillow.
Don’t confuse their lower price for better Value! For a few dollars more, you can get a more reliable bamboo pillow on eBay or Amazon.
The pillow qualifies for Free shipping with Amazon Prime and some Ebay sellers offer free shipping too. The queen size pillows end up costing around $16 each or $32 for the pair and $19 each or $37 for a pair of King size pillows on Amazon. Ebay had them listed for a few dollars more.
Zen bamboo also makes bamboo sheets and mattress toppers. Below you’ll find a few products from Zen Bamboo also sold on Amazon.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Zen Bamboo Pillow
Buying bamboo sheets and pillows may be something new to some of us and you may have several questions before making up your mind.
Don’t worry! Here are the most common questions asked about the Zen Bamboo pillow to help you in finding the best bamboo pillow for you.
“Is the Zen bamboo pillow like a regular Memory foam pillow?”
No, “Zen Bamboo” uses “Gel” in their bamboo pillows. This makes it (a bit softer & less firm) to sleep on compared to a standard memory foam pillow.
“Is it sold in a single or double pack?”
In case you’re wondering how many pillows you get for the price, they only come in a pack of 2 bamboo pillows from Amazon. Just make sure you pick the right size before placing an order.
“How do you Wash the Zen Bamboo Pillow? (Care Tips)”
As long as you use a pillow cover to protect them, you won’t really need to wash the pillow itself. But if you decide to wash the pillow follow these simple guidelines:
- You may wash the entire Zen Bamboo Pillow on the lowest setting of your washing machine
- Allow to Completely Dry before sleeping on the pillow
- Use a “Bamboo Pillow Cover” to avoid having to keep washing the entire pillow
Overview | Final Thoughts
Price- The Zen Bamboo Ultra Plush Gel pillow isn’t the “Best Bamboo Pillow“ by far! But it’s perfect for an everyday sleeper that’s affordable.
Pillow Cover- The “bamboo pillow cover” is NOT removable and you’ll have to use your own pillow cases to cover them. So you won’t feel the luxurious benefits of the bamboo fabric (like softness, coolness and breathability).
Chemical Odor- Many bamboo pillows have a chemical odor when first opened, this one did too. Contrary to their claim “they are completely allergen and chemical free” (maybe it was from the packaging). Airing it out in the sun for a day, while waiting for it to expand, removed the odor completely.
Softness or “Stiffness”- At first the pillows were stiff and heavier than expected. (As a side sleeper) I found myself curling it in for more neck support. You can see an obvious difference in fluff and size after 3 weeks of normal daily use.
Guarantee- Like all sellers on Amazon, Zen Bamboo also provides a 30 day money back guarantee. That gives you enough time to determine if this bamboo gel pillow fits your sleeping habits or not.
Overall- At around $16 per pillow, the Zen Bamboo Ultra Plush Gel pillow is a good deal for most budgets. I rate the pillow a 4 out of 5 stars for the above reasons, while the average Amazon users rate it at 4.5 stars.
