Are you thinking of replacing your cotton sheets (with bamboo sheets)?
Getting to know the benefits of “Bamboo vs Cotton”, will surely help with your buying decision.
Hello, my name is Molly. My husband and I have been using bamboo sheets for many years now.
Over the years, we’ve purchased and tested all types of products made from bamboo fabrics. From bedding and towels, to bamboo briefs and bamboo panties, we’ve tried them all!
To our surprise, we’ve found that not all bamboo products enjoy the same benefits.
For example, some bamboo sheets are softer and more eco-friendly than others. While many might have “Bamboo” on the label, but feel like cheap cotton sheets at best!
We also found that Viscose from Bamboo isn’t the same as Bamboo Rayon. There’s a Huge Difference between the 2 types of fabrics that you won’t find on most labels.

Types of Bamboo Fabrics (+Benefits)
Bamboo can be used to make different types of fabrics and materials. Here’s a quick run down of the 3 types of bamboo fabrics used to make sheets, pillows and clothing.
- Bamboo Linen
- Viscose from Bamboo
- Rayon from Bamboo
What is Bamboo Linen? (Benefits of Bamboo Linen)
Companies use either a mechanical method or chemical method to make bamboo fabrics. Almost all companies today use a chemical process to make bamboo fabrics.
The mechanical method crushes the inner, woody part of the bamboo along with the leaves. They’re then broken down using natural enzymes along with a “retting” and washing process.
This method produces a natural bamboo fabric commonly called bamboo linen.
Out of the 3 types of fabrics, bamboo linen retains the highest amount of benefits that bamboo has to offer.
Bamboo linen can have antibacterial properties, is much stronger, more durable and even softer than 1000TC Egyptian Cotton. Bamboo Linen is pretty expensive and mainly found in high-end bamboo sheets and clothing.
Comfort and Softness | Benefits of Bamboo vs Cotton
The first benefit of bamboo sheets I will mention is the one that amazed us the most. Softness and Comfort.
When made into linens, Bamboo sheets can be softer than 1000 thread Egyptian cotton sheets. I can’t put in words the type of comfort and softness we immediately noticed from our new sheets.
I’m talking about softness that compares to Silk and Cashmere! Now imagine sleeping every night, Covered in that silky softness.
The reason I mention Cariloha, is they truly have great customer service and high quality bamboo sheets. They use 100% Bamboo Viscose to make their fabrics, which can be hard to find. Their bamboo sheets are top of the line and some of the softest in the industry.
Cariloha also provides a Lifetime Warranty, which made paying a bit extra for higher quality sheets much easier for us. In case you accidentally ruined your sheets, as we did years later, Cariloha will replace them for FREE under their warranty.
Breathability of Bamboo Sheets
Bamboo fabric is a fascinating material. It has properties that are unique and extraordinary compared to cotton or other fabric blends.
The next benefit I’ll mention is the Breathability of bamboo fabrics.
Let me explain what I mean by Breathability. Have you ever experienced a hot, humid and muggy Summer day? I bet you did. And then a gust of Cool air blows through your blouse and gives you the shivers. Well that Breathability comes built into bamboo fabrics, Naturally.
If you find yourself having to turn over frequently at night, trying to find a cool spot on the bed, a nice set of bamboo sheets or comforter provide the coolness you’re looking for. The silky-smooth bamboo fibers wick away moisture and keep your body free from sweat while you sleep.
Combined with the silky-soft comfort and moisture wicking breathability of Bamboo, trust me, you’re in for a good night’s sleep. So say goodbye to night-time tossing and turning and hello to Cool Relaxing nights.
Bamboo Benefits from a Naturally Cooler Temperature
Benefiting from increased breathability, we now move to the “natural coolness” of bamboo fabrics.
All natural fibers have a built-in thermostat that manages their temperature. Like silk, cotton, and all other types of fabrics, bamboo fabrics also benefit from having a built-in thermostat.
But bamboo fabrics have their thermostat turned way down making them cooler than the rest, Naturally!
Quick Fact – Research shows; Bamboo produces a natural fiber that is 3 degrees cooler than cotton fibers.
Bamboo sheets also have a higher moisture absorbency than most other fabrics, like cotton, flannel or fleece. Since bamboo fabrics can absorb moisture more efficiently, they can wick away sweat from your body better than cotton sheets. The moisture wicking benefit of the fabric makes it an ideal material for ultra-soft and cool clothing and bamboo underwear.
Clothes made from bamboo will keep you cooler and dryer when it’s hot, and warmer when it’s cold. Bamboo sheets are no exception! They also benefit from the moisture wicking properties to help you sleep drier and cooler. More clothing made from bamboo fabrics can be found everywhere and has become a great alternative to cotton .

Bamboo is Naturally Hypoallergenic
Like many others in the world, I also suffer from allergies and have sensitive skin. If you’re wondering what the relationship is between allergies and bamboo sheets, I’ll tell you.
What does Bamboo have to do with allergies and sensitive skin?
Some species of Bamboo have a natural resistance to insects and diseases. Because of this natural resistance, fewer pesticides are used. Most bamboo is actually grown without the use of any type of pesticides.
The bamboo stalks regenerate naturally without needing chemical treatments or pesticides. Fabrics treated with harsh chemicals can flare up allergies and skin rashes, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Say goodbye to the morning sniffles and watery eyes. Since bamboo viscose is naturally hypoallergenic, it will help you get the relief you need from your allergies while sleeping.
With the Bamboo sheets I got from Cariloha, I instantly saw results after the first night we slept in them. I woke up the following morning and my nose wasn’t as stuffy and my eyes weren’t as watery. Changing our other bedding helped even more with my allergies.
Durability of Bamboo Sheets
Recent advances in manufacturing have made it possible to convert strong bamboo into Super-Soft fabric. Bamboo sheets are 2 times softer than 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets!
Products made from bamboo are as strong or stronger than their counterparts. You’ll immediately notice the fabric is lighter than other fabrics, and also more durable.
According to Newsweek.com – Despite its lowly reputation, bamboo may be the strongest stuff on the planet. It has greater tensile strength (or resistance to being pulled apart) than steel, and it withstands compression better than concrete.
No matter the type of sheets you get, be sure to read and follow the care instructions to avoid damaging them. This will also insure they last longer and stand the test of time.
The durability of your bamboo sheets also has a lot to do with the warranty they come with. Most sheets come with a standard 1 year replacement warranty from the manufacturer.
But some companies take their warranty a step further and offer a longer period than 1 year. Cariloha even provides a “Lifetime Warranty” on their bamboo sheets.
“How long do bamboo sheets last?”
I’ve owned plenty of bamboo sheets throughout the years and none of them have given us any issues other than normal wear and tear.
But in case they need replacing, you only need to contact the company for a replacement set. Keeping your receipt handy is a good idea as well.
Tip: Take a screenshot of the Amazon payment and order details as proof-of-purchase. You can email it to yourself and save it online for safe keeping.
All I had to do was fill out the online warranty form and ship them back to be exchanged with new sheets! The process took several days from start to finish.
Eco-Friendly Benefits of Bamboo Sheets
I’m not going to pretend I know everything about bamboo and how it’s eco-friendly. Below are facts I gathered from online research showing why bamboo is good for the environment. So forgive me if it seems too technical and boring.
Hands down, bamboo is one of the most sustainable resources on the planet for the following reasons
- Bamboo is actually a grass and not a tree. Like the weeds in our backyard, it grows everywhere- Fast.
- Bamboo grows back after being cut down to make fabrics. Unlike Cotton that has to be replanted after each harvest.
- Some species can grow up-to 4 feet per day naturally without any pesticides. Imagine having your backyard full of bamboo growing that fast everyday!
- It requires very little water and only takes about 2-3 years to fully mature. Compared to the 40-60 years it takes for a Maple tree to reach maturity.
- Bamboo and other plants convert pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, into clean breathable fresh oxygen. However bamboo does it 5 times better than an average tree.
- According to Wikipedia “Bamboo minimises CO2 and generates up to 35% more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees.” Cleaning our air and helping us breathe a little bit better today and for future generations as well.
“What makes Bamboo more Ecofriendly than cotton?”
Bamboo saves more trees, regenerates naturally without pesticides or chemicals, It also keeps our soil stronger, our air cleaner and our environment healthier. Along with all the environmental benefits of bamboo, the soft, breathable hypoallergenic fabric makes it a much more Eco friendly alternative than anything else.
Bamboo fabrics are quickly becoming a viable resource for several retailers. Used to make shirts, pants, bedding, towels and even lingerie, it’s clearly a fabric that we will see more and more of and isn’t going anywhere soon.

About the Author (Molly Emery)
Like many of you, I also didn’t know about the benefits of bamboo fabrics and bed sheets. I was never brave enough to give bamboo products a chance. That all changed when it was time to replace our old, worn out cotton sheets.
I started reading books and articles about how bamboo is superior to other trees and plants. I also read about how it’s made into a fabric that’s soft as silk.
My husband, Tim went ahead and ordered our first bamboo sheets from Amazon. We read many reviews from verified buyers and decided to get the Cariloha Classic sheets. They were one of the highest rated bamboo sheets and came with a Lifetime Warranty!
Up until that day, I had no idea how much softer bamboo fabrics were, compared to cotton. Let alone the many other natural benefits of bamboo.
