I own both styles, and the difference is easy to feel. My Coop Eden and Snuggle-Pedic pillows contain loose fill that I can move, remove, or add. My Cariloha Gel Pillow has one solid foam core. The adjustable pillows let me change the height. The Cariloha stays firm and keeps its shape without any fuss.

- Choose shredded memory foam if you want to change the pillow’s height or reshape the fill under your neck and shoulder.

What shredded memory foam feels like
A shredded foam pillow has many small pieces inside a fabric liner. Those pieces move when you press on the pillow, so you can push more fill toward your neck or flatten the center under your head.
That adjustability is the reason I prefer this style most of the time. I needed extra fill for my Coop Eden, and Coop makes additional fill available. I also readjust the pillow after washing its cover because taking the cover off and putting it back on can shift the fill. It takes a minute, but I can bring the pillow back to the height I want.
My Snuggle-Pedic works the same basic way. I can open the liner and change the amount of fill, although I usually start by moving the fill around before removing any. For a side sleeper, a little more foam along the edge can help fill the space between the shoulder and head. Back sleepers often need less height. There is one detail worth checking before you buy. Some pillows use shredded foam but sew the inner liner closed. The fill can still move, but you cannot remove it to lower the pillow. Look for a zippered inner liner if adjustability is the reason you want shredded foam.
What solid memory foam feels like
A solid memory foam pillow has one continuous core. It compresses under your head, but you cannot change the amount of foam or move it from one area to another.
My Cariloha Gel Pillow feels firm and reliable. I can place it on the bed and know it will feel the same the next night. It does not need fluffing, and the foam does not collect at one end. That is useful if you dislike the upkeep that comes with loose fill.
The tradeoff is simple: the height is fixed. If the pillow is too tall for your shoulder width, mattress, or sleep position, there is no fill to remove. A softer mattress also lets your body sink farther into the bed, which can reduce the pillow height you need. This is why a solid foam pillow can feel right on one bed and too tall on another.
Which one sleeps cooler?
Shredded foam has spaces between the pieces, which can allow more air to move through the fill than it can through a solid block. That does not make every shredded pillow cool. The cover, liner, foam density, added fiber, room temperature, and pillow protector all affect how warm the finished pillow feels.
My Snuggle-Pedic feels cool for a memory foam pillow. My Cariloha has cooling gel on the solid core, but I would not choose between the two styles based on the words “cooling gel” or “bamboo” alone. I would look at the whole pillow and buy from a company with a useful return or trial policy.
Cleaning and upkeep are different
Loose fill usually needs more attention. It can settle, especially after the cover is removed, so the pillow may need to be shaken and worked back into shape. My guide to fluffing a bamboo pillow shows how I loosen clumps and redistribute the fill.
Do not assume the foam can go in the washing machine. Follow the label for the exact pillow. Coop currently says the Eden pillow and cover are machine washable under its care instructions. Cariloha says to machine wash the removable cover on a gentle cycle, spot clean the foam core, and let the core air dry. The instructions are different even though both product names mention bamboo.

Which type would I buy?
I would buy an adjustable shredded memory foam pillow when I am unsure about the right height. Being able to remove a handful of fill is more useful to me than trying to make a fixed pillow work. I sleep mostly on my side, so I also like being able to keep more fill near my shoulder.
I would choose solid memory foam when I already know I like that pillow’s height and firmness. The Cariloha is the easier pillow to own because it does not need adjusting. It is simply less forgiving if its fixed shape does not fit you.
